Data We Collect
Your financial data never leaves your device. All calculations happen locally in your browser. We don't collect, transmit, or store any of your numbers—not your income, expenses, savings, or anything else you enter.
We don't have accounts, we don't track individual users, and we have no access to your financial information. The only personal data we ever store is an email address you explicitly give us for the optional newsletter, described below.
Local Storage
We save a few preferences locally in your browser:
- Theme preference: Light or dark mode
- Font size: Your preferred text size
- Currency: Your preferred currency display
- Cookie consent: Whether you accepted or declined analytics cookies
- Calculator inputs: Your last-used values for each calculator
This data never leaves your device and is not sent to any server.
Analytics
We use two analytics services to understand how visitors use our site:
Cloudflare Web Analytics (Always Active)
Cloudflare Web Analytics is our primary analytics tool. It:
- Does not use cookies
- Does not track individual users
- Does not collect personal information
- Is privacy-first and GDPR compliant
This runs automatically and requires no consent because it collects no personal data.
Google Analytics (Optional, Consent Required)
If you accept cookies, we also use Google Analytics 4 to get additional insights about site usage. When enabled, it:
- Uses cookies to distinguish unique visitors
- Collects anonymized IP addresses (we enable IP anonymization)
- Tracks page views and time on site
- Does not collect names, emails, or financial data you enter
You can decline these cookies via the consent banner, and we will never load Google Analytics. Your choice is stored locally and remembered on future visits.
Microsoft Clarity (Optional, Consent Required)
If you accept cookies, we also use Microsoft Clarity to understand how visitors interact with the site through session recordings and heatmaps. When enabled, it:
- Records anonymized session replays (clicks, scrolls, mouse movement)
- Generates heatmaps showing where visitors click and scroll
- Does not capture text you type into forms or financial data
- Masks sensitive content by default
Like Google Analytics, Clarity only loads if you accept cookies. See Clarity's Privacy Policy for details.
Your Choices
When you first visit, you'll see a cookie consent banner. You can:
- Accept: Enables Google Analytics cookies
- Decline: Only cookieless Cloudflare Analytics runs
To change your preference, clear your browser's localStorage for this site or use your browser's developer tools to remove the fi-calc-cookie-consent key.
Newsletter (Optional)
If you sign up for the research digest, we store three things in our Cloudflare account: your email address, the timestamp of your signup, and the timestamp of your confirmation. Signup is double opt-in—nothing is stored permanently until you click the confirmation link, and unconfirmed requests delete themselves within 7 days.
- Unsubscribing deletes your address entirely. No suppression list, no retained record.
- Delivery processor: confirmation and digest emails are sent through Mailjet, which processes your address for delivery only.
- Never combined with anything. Your email is not linked to analytics, calculator inputs, or any profile. Those never leave your browser.
Plan Builder Chat (Optional)
The Fire Planner has an optional chat that turns a written description of your finances into a pre-filled plan. If you use it, your chat messages are sent to Cloudflare's Workers AI service to extract the numbers, and the response comes straight back to your browser. We do not store the conversation, and it is not linked to analytics or anything else. The profile it builds lives in your browser like every other profile. If you never open the chat, nothing is sent.
External Resources
The only other external resource we load is Chart.js from a CDN to render the portfolio growth charts.
